Location:

Embark on an enchanting journey, just a stone's throw away from Alipurduar, West Bengal and find yourself in the captivating embrace of nature at the majestic Buxa Tiger Reserve. It is around 30 km from Alipurduar, West Bengal. On the east of the Buxa Tiger Reserve is the Bhutan Hills also known as Jayanti Hills and on the west lies the Jayanti village. As you venture deeper into this pristine wilderness, a hidden gem awaits you in the form of the charming forest. The region of Dooars is incredible and one can experience it in the flora and fauna of the woodland. 

 

Area:

The Buxa Tiger Reserve is spread across 759 sq km of land. The weather conditions in Buxa Tiger Reserve remain stable throughout the year except from March to May when the temperature tends to rise. The average temperature drops to 12 degrees Celsius in winter and rises to 32 degrees Celsius in the summer months. Buxa Tiger Reserve is closed to visitors during the monsoon season which is from mid-June to mid-September. The best time to visit the forest reserve is during the winter months, especially from December to February. Road commute to Buxa Tiger Reserve is very convenient. There are many shared and private cabs available that will take you on a hassle-free ride to your destination. Rajabhatkhawa is the entry point to Buxa Tiger Reserve. It takes almost four hours by road from NJP and Bagdogra to Buxa. While traveling from Jaldapara it takes less than two hours to reach Rajabhatkhawa. There is also a small station in Rajabhatkhawa. Only the passenger trains running between Alipurduar and Siliguri have a stoppage here. It is the best route for low-budget travelers.

 

Wildlife:

The perfect way to enjoy it is through safari tours. You will be taken to all the spotlights in and around Jayanti. Buxa Tiger Reserve is home to over 36 reptile species, 67 mammal species and around 230 bird species. The fun fact is that a portion of the bird species is yet to be identified. Another interesting fact is that the elephant migration between India and Bhutan takes place through the Buxa Tiger Reserve. 

 

Flora: 

Within the acres lies the renowned flora, rivers and streams and myriad places that remain flourishing deep in the Sinchula Range throughout the year. The panorama of the journey to the Buxa Tiger Reserve is one of the most famous points of attraction among travel enthusiasts. The Buxa Tiger Reserve extends to become the Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary in Bhutan. Research says that the forest reserve is a fusion of almost eight forest types making it a perfect destination for those looking for photography tours.

 

Fauna:

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, capturing visitors from all over the world. One of the most notable attractions of Buxa Tiger Reserve is its population of majestic tigers. These elusive big cats roam freely within the dense forests. Additionally, its rich fauna boasts a noteworthy array of species, including Asian elephants, clouded and Indian leopards, sambar deer, gaur and Asian golden cat. Fulvous whistling duck, red jungle fowl, Himalayan moral and kalij pheasant are some of the birds that can be seen in the area.

Pokhari is a tourist-favorite destination famous for giant catfish and turtles. It is also a sacred place for the locals. Near Pokhari is the Mahakal cave, another must-visit attraction. Trekking is also common in the area. The most common route is from Buxaduar to Jayanti via the Buxa Tiger Reserve. It is a 13 km long trek. A visit to the Buxa Fort is also recommended.
