Tabakoshi

Tabakoshi, Responsible Tourism Hub of Bengal

Tabakoshi is a land of slow travel. It is a place where beauty never fades. Situated in the Rangbhang river valley, the offbeat destination in North Bengal got its name from the river itself. The river changes its color to copper-like during the monsoon season and it came to be locally known as ‘Tambakoshi’ or ‘Tabakoshi’. ‘Tamba’ stands for copper and ‘koshi’ stands for ‘river’ in Nepali.

The tea tourism of the land is alluring. The beauty of the tea gardens and the view of the tea gardeners in their working self resembles a soothing painted canvas. There are a total of eight major tea estates. Some of the popular ones are Thurbo, Seyok, Gopaldhara, Turzum and Nagri, just to name a few.

It is said that the plan to make Tabakoshi into an ecotourism hub started long back in 1989. It was only in 2013 that proper steps were taken for the same. Thus, the recent developments taken towards protecting the rural tourism of the land have revived the real beauty of the land and made it a perfect holiday destination. Inhabited by the Tamang, Rai and Lepcha community people, you can experience the cultures and traditions as you go on seeing the attractions, have a chat with them or enjoy your meal in a local tavern.

It is not only the cultural tourism of the land but also the interests of the locals to save the identity of the land that makes Tabakoshi a ‘worth-visit’ destination. The main occupation here is farming and every delicacy served is made from local produce. You can taste the authentic world-renowned ‘Darjeeling Tea’ at Tabakoshi as well. The destination has a lot of attractions that are worth a visit, however, it is also filled with unexplored places perfect for an adventure trip. There is no scope for a second thought when you plan on visiting Tabakoshi!

Tabakoshi is gradually transforming into a conservation travel hub. It is also the most preferred destination when it comes to photography tours. Tabakoshi has a lot to offer. The visitors as they reach the destination, begin their tour by visiting one of the many tea gardens. The sparkling dewy green leaves intensify the beauty of the land manifold. There is a tourist spot alongside river Tambakoshi, which also has a big swimming pool and beautiful garden perfect for kids and families.

Everything you see in Tabakoshi is organic. A walking tour of the sustainable tourism hub is the best way to experience its best self. Tabakoshi is filled with orange gardens, cardamom and ginger fields. There are also fishing spots in Tabakoshi. A visit to such places is a must to see the wonders of nature that city life can never deliver!

Apart from the natural wonders, a few historic temples are tourist favorites. The Vishnu Temple is said to be the only Vishnu temple in the region. Next, there is a pagoda-shaped Shiva Temple beside the Tambakoshi River. There are two best hiking spots that visitors here opt for. A shorter one to Achalal Busti, where the River Tambakoshi originates and a longer one to Simana Dara, Indo-Nepal border via Mirik.

Tabakoshi is located at an altitude of over 3608 ft. It does not witness many temperature fluctuations. During winters, especially in December and January, temperatures are generally recorded at -1 to -2 degrees celsius. In May and June, temperatures can rise to 22 degrees Celsius.

Tabakoshi being a heritage travel hub welcomes visitors throughout the year. To experience Tabakoshi at its very best, the best time to visit is March to July and again in October and November. Winters are best for bird-watching here.
